Unilock Bathroom Remodeling: The San Jose Owner’s Guide

Unilock bathroom remodeling in San Jose typically runs $10,620 to $33,040 fully installed, depending on the scope, the condition of your subfloor, and whether you’re swapping fixtures or moving walls. Most Unilock paver and wall products don’t fail suddenly; they degrade over years, and you’ll usually catch the problem as cracked grout lines, loose coping, or water staining before you see full failure. If you’re noticing any of those symptoms, this page tells you exactly what’s happening and what it costs to fix.

What we see most often in San Jose bathrooms is not a failed Unilock product. It’s a failed installation underneath it, or a substrate that moved after the fact. Unilock makes a solid product. What makes or breaks it in a wet room is what’s behind it: the waterproofing, the slope, the mortar bed, the fasteners. That’s where we spend most of our repair time, and that’s what this guide is built around.

Which Unilock Models This Applies To

A remodeled hall bathroom with patterned floor tile and painted walls

Most San Jose homeowners don’t think of Unilock as a bathroom brand. They know it for driveways, patios, retaining walls. But Unilock’s smaller-format pavers and wall units show up in a lot of custom bathroom work here: the thin paver used as a shower floor accent, the matte tumbled wall units lining a vanity wall, the bullnose coping pieces framing a tub deck. Those pieces come in different thicknesses and face profiles than what the big-box stores carry, and the wrong match stands out like a sore thumb.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha: Unilock paver dimensions are nominal, not exact. What the spec sheet calls a 6-inch paver might measure 5-7/8 on one side and 6-1/8 on the other, because manufacturing tolerances allow for a sliver of variance. In a bathroom, that sliver matters. We’ve seen homeowners buy a pile of matching pavers from a landscape supply yard thinking they’ll drop right into a shower floor, and the result is chipped edges and uneven spacing. You need the original product code from your original order, or at minimum a measured sample, to get this right.

As for OEM versus aftermarket, Unilock doesn’t make faucets, drain assemblies, or shower valves. When we say a Unilock bathroom remodel, we mean the Unilock structural and finish materials in the room: the paver floors, wall units, and coping that carry the Unilock name. The plumbing fixtures around them are usually Kohler, Moen, or Delta, and those we source from documented suppliers so you know exactly what you’re paying for. Bradford Remodeling Co San Jose is an independent contractor. We’re not affiliated with Unilock, and we tell you that plainly because it matters when you’re comparing bids.

Signs Your Unilock Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

  • Grout lines cracking or crumbling in the shower floor. This usually means the mortar bed underneath is flexing. Unilock pavers are rigid. If the substrate moves even a fraction of an inch, the grout takes the hit first, then the paver edges start spalling.
  • Water staining on the ceiling below the bathroom. By the time you see a stain on the drywall downstairs, the waterproofing barrier above it has already failed. In San Jose’s older ranch houses, this is one of the most common calls we get from Willow Glen, Cambrian, and Berryessa.
  • Loose or rocking paver underfoot. A solid paver doesn’t move. If one shifts when you step on it, the setting bed beneath it has washed out or broken down. Every shower you take makes it worse.
  • Efflorescence, the white chalky film on dark pavers. Not always a failure. Sometimes it’s just mineral deposits wicking through. But if it keeps coming back after cleaning, you’ve got moisture trapped behind the surface, and that’s a waterproofing problem waiting to be exposed.
  • Musty odor that won’t go away, even after scrubbing. Smell is honest. A bathroom that smells like wet concrete weeks after the last shower has a drainage or waterproofing failure you cannot see yet. It’s behind the wall or under the floor.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A low-threshold walk-in shower with a bench and grab bar

In San Jose, a Unilock bathroom remodel runs $10,620 to $33,040 fully installed. The low end covers a shower floor replacement with the existing footprint kept intact: tear out the old pavers, repair and re-slope the mud bed, install new waterproofing, reset the Unilock pieces, and re-grout. The high end is a complete gut-out: walls down to studs, new subfloor in places, new curb, new glass, new fixtures, and a larger shower or vanity configuration. What drives the spread is mostly what’s underneath: if the subfloor is rotten from a long leak, we’re adding structural repair and possibly joist work before any finish material goes down.

Every bid includes the same things, in writing: line-item prices for demo, materials, labor, and fixture allowances. The written price you get before work starts is the price you pay, unless you change the scope. No number moves when we show up with the crew. All work carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the install fails within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That promise is in writing, on every project. No verbal assurances, no fine-print carve-outs. It’s how Curtis Lane has run Bradford Remodeling since day one, and it’s the Garrison Standard applied to every job we take.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do the diagnostic work yourself. Check for loose pavers. Look at the grout lines under bright light. Run the shower and watch where water pools. That information helps us quote you faster. What we don’t recommend is pulling up pavers on your own. Once you break the waterproofing layer, you’ve turned a $12,000 repair into a $25,000 remediation if you don’t know how to rebuild it correctly. Unilock pieces set in a wet room are not a weekend project. There’s no way around it: get the mud bed wrong, and you’ll be tearing it out again in two years.

If the room is still dry and the damage is cosmetic, clean it, seal it, live with it. If water is going somewhere it shouldn’t, call (669) 272-2637. We’ll give you the straight number and the written scope before anything gets torn out.
