Sakrete Driveway & Pavers: The San Jose Owner’s Guide
If you’re holding a cracked paver or a driveway edge that’s spalling after a few San Jose winters, here’s the straight answer: we stock Sakrete-compatible driveway and paver products, and a typical repair or replacement install in San Jose runs between $4,130 and $21,240 depending on square footage and what’s underneath the surface. Most driveway and paver repairs are booked within a week, and we’ll give you a written price before any concrete gets mixed. The usual discovery point is a corner that’s crumbled, a paver that’s settled an inch below its neighbors, or a surface that’s started flaking after years of wet-dry cycles.
Sakrete makes good bagged mixes, but the product is only half the result. What fails first in San Jose is almost always the substrate, the compacted base under the pavers or slab. If that base was never compacted right or drainage wasn’t sloped, the surface product takes the blame but it was doomed from the start. We fix both, because one without the other just means you’ll call us again in two years.
Which Sakrete Models This Applies To

Sakrete’s driveway and paver lineup splits into two families: their High-Strength Concrete Mix for poured slabs and driveway edges, and their Paver Set Polymeric Sand plus Paver Base products for segmental paver systems. If you’ve got a bag in the garage, check the printed SKU on the side. The High-Strength Mix bags run from 50 to 80 pounds, and the number after the product name, like 4000 or 5000, tells you the PSI rating once cured. The Paver Set sand bags from Sakrete come in gray and tan; matching the color matters more for joints between pavers than people expect. The gray works with cool-toned pavers. The tan pulls warm. Mix them up and your joints will look dirty from day one.
One compatibility gotcha we see in San Jose: Sakrete’s High-Strength Mix is not the same as their Fast-Setting Concrete Mix. Fast-Setting is for posts and small pours that need to set in under an hour. High-Strength is the one rated for vehicular loads on a driveway. If a handyman uses Fast-Setting under a driveway edge, the first hot San Jose summer will crack it. We use manufacturer-spec product for every pour and every paver base, and we document the bag SKU on your written scope so there is no guessing later.
For pavers, the Sakrete paver base product works fine as a leveling layer, but the real structural work is the compacted aggregate underneath. We run 4 to 6 inches of Class II road base, compacted in lifts, before any Sakrete paver base goes down. That detail is the difference between a patio that stays flat for fifteen years and one that looks like a topo map after two rainy seasons. Bradford Remodeling Co San Jose is an independent contractor; we are not affiliated with Sakrete, but we work with their products daily and know which bag goes where.

Signs Your Sakrete Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Edges crumbling or spalling. This is the classic San Jose wet-dry cycle problem. Water seeps into the concrete edge, and when temps swing, the surface layer pops off in small flakes. It starts cosmetic, but it opens the door for deeper damage once the aggregate is exposed.
- Pavers sinking or rocking underfoot. A paver that moves means the base underneath has eroded or was never compacted. In San Jose’s clay-heavy soil, poor drainage turns the base into soft mud during winter rains, and the pavers drop with it. One rocking paver is an early warning; a field of them means a full base rebuild.
- Cracks wider than a quarter inch. Hairline cracks happen as concrete cures. Cracks you can put a key in are structural. They mean the slab is shifting, usually from soil movement or a failing base, and they won’t seal their way back to strength.
- Polymeric sand washing out of paver joints. If you sweep the joints and the sand disappears after every rain, the pavers are moving enough to break the sand bond. Left alone, the pavers will start shifting sideways and the whole surface loses its lock.
- Standing water that doesn’t drain. A driveway or patio that holds puddles for more than an hour after rain has a slope problem. Water sitting on concrete accelerates spalling, and on pavers it erodes the joint sand and base. This is a grading fix, not a sealant fix.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Here are the real numbers for San Jose. Paver driveway installation runs $8,260 to $21,240. Concrete driveway installation runs $5,310 to $14,160. Paver patio installation runs $4,130 to $12,980. If you’re replacing an existing driveway, the full replacement range is $5,900 to $16,520. The spread is driven by square footage, access, how much old material has to be hauled out, and whether we’re fixing the base or starting fresh.
Every quote includes the Sakrete product or compatible equivalent, all base and prep materials, demo and haul-off of the failed surface if needed, and the labor to install it right. We price by the job, not by the hour, and the written price is the price. If we hit something unexpected underground, you’ll know the cost before we move another inch. And every completed project carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the surface fails within that year, we come back and correct it at no charge. No phone tag, no renegotiation.
DIY or Call Us?
Some things are worth checking yourself. If a single paver has settled, you can lift it and look at the base underneath. If it’s just a little low, you might get away with adding paver base and re-setting it. If you see standing water under it or the base looks like mud, that’s a drainage problem and a bag of sand won’t fix it.
Here’s where DIY goes wrong on driveways and pavers: mixing concrete for a vehicular load is not like pouring a mailbox post. The mix has to be right, the base has to be compacted, and the slope has to be graded or your “repair” becomes the next failure. For anything wider than a single paver or deeper than a surface patch, the cost of doing it twice is higher than doing it once with the right prep. That’s what we do. Call (669) 272-2637 and we’ll come look, give you a written number, and tell you straight if it’s a repair or a redo.
FAQs

A properly installed concrete driveway with a compacted base should give you 20 to 30 years in San Jose’s climate. Pavers on a solid base can last even longer since individual units can be replaced. What shortens that lifespan fast is a bad base, poor drainage, or the wrong product for the load. We see driveways that fail in five years because the base was skimped on, and we see thirty-year-old slabs that just now need their first edge repair.
Hairline cracks can often be routed and sealed, and spalled edges can be patched with a polymer-modified repair mix rated for feathered edges. But a crack wider than a quarter inch with a height difference on either side means the slab is moving, and patching it is cosmetic. In that case we’ll tell you the repair will buy time, not fix the cause, and we’ll price both options in writing before you decide. Call (669) 272-2637 and we’ll give you an honest read on which path makes sense.
Most single-day jobs here are paver re-leveling or small concrete patches, and those are done in one visit. A full driveway tear-out and pour takes three to five working days, including demo, base prep, pouring, and cure time before vehicles can drive on it. Paver patios run similar. We’ll give you the timeline in writing when we give you the price, so there’s no guesswork on when the site is squared away.
