James Hardie Windows & Doors: The San Jose Owner’s Guide
We stock and install James Hardie-compatible windows and doors across San Jose, with most replacements running between $5,310 and $17,700 installed depending on size, series, and prep work. If your James Hardie window won’t lock, a door slab has started warping, or you’re seeing daylight through a corner joint, the part failed the way Hardie products typically fail in California weather: heat cycling, dry rot at the sill, or a bad flashing job from the original install. You don’t need a full remodel. You need the right part matched to your model, a straight number on the repair, and a crew that shows up.
Bradford Remodeling Co San Jose is an independent service provider, not affiliated with James Hardie. We source OEM parts where it matters and quality equivalents where it doesn’t, and we put the price in writing before any work starts.
Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

James Hardie’s window and door product line spans the HardieTrim board system, HardieSoffit panels, and the Artisan series of trim that pairs with their fiber-cement siding. The compatibility gotcha most San Jose homeowners hit is thickness. HardieTrim comes in 5/4 (actually 1 inch thick) and 4/4 (actually 3/4 inch thick) profiles, and the wrong thickness leaves a visible step at the jamb. The fix is matching the part to the existing reveal, not just the color.
Identifying your part comes down to two things. First, look for a product code stamped on the back of trim boards or inside the door frame extrusion. Second, measure the exposed face width. HardieTrim boards run 3.5, 5.5, 7.25, 9.25, and 11.25 inches wide. If you have a 7.25-inch corner board, a 5.5-inch replacement won’t sit right. For OEM versus aftermarket: James Hardie’s own trim holds its profile in San Jose’s dry summer heat better than generic fiber-cement boards, but aftermarket corner flashing and sealant often outperform the original spec. We carry both and tell you which is worth paying for. We also handle parts for KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone projects where the opening needs re-framing around a new window or door unit.

Signs Your James Hardie Windows & Doors Is Failing
- Visible gap at the corner joint. HardieTrim corners are mitered or butt-jointed and sealed. In San Jose’s July heat, the joint opens because the original installer didn’t leave expansion clearance. Water gets behind the board and starts working on the substrate.
- Paint peeling at the bottom edge only. That’s wicking moisture from a sill that drains poorly or a drip cap that was never installed. The board is swelling at the cut edge, and caulk won’t save it.
- Door binds at the top corner. A James Hardie door frame that binds seasonally usually means the rough opening wasn’t flashed, so the frame is absorbing moisture and moving. In San Jose’s wet winters, this gets worse every year, not better.
- Soft spots under the window sill. By the time you can push a screwdriver into the sill plate, the rot has been running for two to three years. The Hardie part usually looks fine. The wood behind it is gone.
- Hairline crack running the length of a trim board. Fiber cement can crack from impact or from a fastener driven too tight without a pilot hole. A cracked board won’t heal, and the crack opens a water path to the sheathing.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For James Hardie window replacement in San Jose, a standard vinyl or fiber-cement-matched unit runs $5,310 to $17,700 installed. That includes tear-out of the old unit, inspection of the rough opening, new flashing, the replacement window or door, HardieTrim to match where needed, and hardscape-grade cleanup. The range swings on three things: whether the opening needs re-framing due to rot, whether you’re replacing one window or a full elevation, and whether you want OEM James Hardie trim or a quality equivalent.
- Single window replacement, standard size: $5,310 – $8,850
- Single door replacement, standard size: $5,310 – $9,440
- Window plus trim repair, one elevation: $8,850 – $14,750
- Full elevation (windows + doors + HardieTrim), one story: $11,800 – $17,700
Every price is written before we start, and the job is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the part or the install fails inside a year, we come back and correct it at no charge. No change orders at the door. Curtis Lane signs the scope, and the scope doesn’t move.
DIY or Call Us?
You can check the caulk joints yourself, and you can look for daylight through the corners. That part is free and takes ten minutes. What you shouldn’t do is pull trim boards off a San Jose house and expect to find a clean opening. Fiber-cement trim hides what’s behind it, and the substrate in older Willow Glen ranch homes is often worse than it looks from the street. We’ve opened walls where the sheathing was gone from the sill down and the only thing holding the window was the Hardie board itself.
If the board is cracked, the corner is open, or the door won’t stop binding, call (669) 272-2637. We’ll send a uniformed technician to measure, match the part, and hand you a written number. If it’s minor and you want to handle it yourself, we’ll tell you that too. Straight number, written scope, done when we said done.
FAQs

James Hardie trim and door components typically last 20 to 30 years in San Jose’s climate, but the failure point is rarely the fiber cement itself. It’s the flashing behind it and the sealant at the joints. A well-installed Hardie window surround can outlast two sets of windows. A badly flashed one shows problems inside five years.
Call (669) 272-2637 and we’ll tell you if your part is failing or if the substrate is the problem. Estimates are free.
No. Fiber cement doesn’t patch cleanly, and any sealant repair is temporary at best. The crack will telegraph through paint and reopen. Replacement is the only fix that holds, and we match the new board to the existing profile and color so the elevation reads continuous.
Call (669) 272-2637 for a written quote on the replacement board and labor. No numbers that move at the door.
A standard single window or door swap runs one day. A full elevation with trim work runs two to three days depending on how much substrate repair the opening needs. In San Jose, we schedule around the dry season when possible, but we work year-round with proper flashing and sealant.
Call (669) 272-2637 and we’ll give you a realistic timeline in writing before the first tool comes out.
We stock common HardieTrim profiles, corner boards, drip caps, and flashing on the truck, plus the sealants rated for fiber cement. Odd sizes and door slabs are ordered from the manufacturer with a two-to-five-day lead time in San Jose. We’ll tell you at the estimate what’s on hand and what’s coming.
Call (669) 272-2637 to check stock for your specific part. If it’s not on the truck, we’ll order it and confirm the date in writing.
