GAF Fence Installation: The San Jose Owner’s Guide

GAF fence installation in San Jose typically runs $4,130 to $10,620 for a standard residential lot, including materials, concrete footings, and labor. We stock GAF-compatible post kits and hardware on our trucks, so most replacements are priced in writing the same day we inspect the property. You usually find out your GAF fence section has failed the hard way – a post leans after the first real storm, a gate starts dragging across the pavers, or a section of composite board pulled free from the frame and you’re looking at daylight through the gap.

Which GAF Models This Applies To

A home office with a built-in desk and shelves

GAF’s fence products sit inside their Timberline and FenceScape lines, and the compatibility rules matter more than most homeowners expect. The GAF composite fence board is a 5/8-inch-thick profile, which means existing steel or aluminum post frames from other brands won’t grip the board the way a GAF rail channel will. If you’re replacing just the boards, the post spacing has to be checked first – GAF boards span up to 6 feet on center, and San Jose’s older neighborhoods have plenty of fences where the posts were set at 7 or 8 feet to save money thirty years ago. That spacing works fine for cedar, but GAF composite will bow in the midsection under its own weight within a year.

Your OEM options are straightforward: buy GAF boards and rails as a matched set, or replace nothing and live with a patchwork fence. We don’t recommend the patchwork route. There are quality aftermarket composite boards that close-match the GAF profile, but the fade rates differ enough that in San Jose’s summer UV they’ll weather to slightly different tones. If you want the fence to read as one surface, matched GAF is the call. Bradford Remodeling Co San Jose is an independent contractor – we’re not affiliated with GAF – but we spec and install their product line because the manufacturer warranty is enforceable and the dimensional specs are published, which means our written quotes hold.

Signs Your GAF Fence Installation Is Failing

  • A post leans more than a half-inch out of plumb. That’s not a board problem, it’s a footing problem. The post base is either underset (wrong depth for San Jose’s expansive clay) or the original installer skipped rebar and relied on bag mix. Either way, the fix is a re-set post, not a shim.
  • The gate scrapes against the latch side or the ground. Composite fences don’t sag like wood, so a dragging GAF gate means the hinge post is moving. Check the post for cracks at the concrete line. If the post has shifted, the gate will never true up until the post is pulled and re-poured.
  • Boards are pulling out of the top or bottom rail channel. This happens when the rail channel’s grip strips wear down or when the board was force-fit at installation. The board then rides loose and every wind event works it further out. In San Jose’s fall wind season it gets worse fast.
  • Fascia caps or trim boards have separated at the seams. Composite trim moves with temperature swings. If the original installer butted trim joints tight with no expansion allowance, the caps will open up at every seam by the end of the first summer.
  • Screws are backing out at rail connections. Steel rails into steel posts need the right pilot and the right thread pitch. When a box-store self-tapper is used, the threads strip the post hole and the screw walks out. The rail then vibrates with every gate cycle.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Across San Jose, full GAF fence replacement typically lands between $4,130 and $10,620, with perimeter length, post condition, and ground prep driving the spread. A 50-foot side yard runs the low end of the range. A 100-plus-foot rear fence with old concrete footings that need demo runs the high end. Our written quote includes the GAF boards, rails, post hardware, concrete, disposal of the old fence, and the labor to remove and reset posts – no line items added later, no number that moves at the door. Bradford doesn’t do verbal estimates. Curtis Lane signs every estimate, and every completed fence carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if a post shifts or a board fails inside the first year, we return and correct it at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things yourself: sight down the fence line for bowed posts, test the gate swing, and look for screws backed out at rail connections. That inspection tells us what we’re walking into. What you shouldn’t do is pull a GAF post and re-set it with bagged concrete from the home center. Post depth in San Jose soil is the difference between a fence that holds through winter rains and one that lists by spring. We set posts in concrete at code depth with steel posts and through-bolted rails, because a fence has to take wind load, gate torque, and years of soil movement without moving. If you find a leaning post or separating boards, call (669) 272-2637. We’ll put an inspection and a written quote in your hand, and you decide from there.
