Bufftech Kitchen Remodeling: The San Jose Owner’s Guide
Bradford Remodeling Co San Jose installs and retrofits Bufftech kitchen components across the San Jose metro, with full kitchen remodels running $16,520 to $53,100 depending on cabinet run, counter material, and the condition of the existing substrate. Most Bufftech-specific repairs we handle are cabinet face-frame pulls, hinge mortise failures, and laminate edge splits that start small and get worse fast. We’re an independent contractor, not a Bufftech dealer, which means we match the part to your exact model and install it without the OEM markup.
The typical call starts the same way: a homeowner opens a cabinet door and the hinge side feels soft. Or the counter edge catches a sleeve and peels back a strip of laminate. By the time we arrive, the failure usually traces back to one thing – moisture getting where it shouldn’t, or a part that was never re-tightened after the original install settled. Here’s what to know before you spend a dollar.
- Full Bufftech kitchen remodels in San Jose run $16,520 – $53,100; isolated part replacements start much lower.
- We match Bufftech hinge patterns, door profiles, and laminate finishes to your existing model, not a “close enough” substitute.
- Written price before work starts. Always. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the work for a full year in writing.
- If it’s a hinge, drawer glide, or edge strip, we usually finish same day. Full cabinet replacement takes longer.
Which Bufftech Models This Applies To

Bufftech built several kitchen lines that landed in San Jose spec homes and mid-range remodels through the 1990s and 2000s. The product families we see most often are the Thermofoil door lines (sold as “wrapped” doors in some catalogs), the standard laminate slab-door series, and the raised-panel laminate cabinet sets. Each used a different hinge boring pattern and a different drawer-box construction method, which is the first compatibility gotcha: you cannot swap a hinge from one Bufftech line to another without re-boring the door. The mortise depth differs, sometimes by as little as 2mm, and that 2mm is the difference between a door that hangs square and one that sags.
To identify your part, look inside the cabinet door for a Bufftech stamp or a four-digit date code, usually ink-stamped on the hinge side of the frame. If the stamp is gone, measure the hinge cup diameter: the common sizes are 35mm and 26mm. The 35mm cups are easiest to replace with quality aftermarket hinges from Blum or Salice with no retrofit work. The 26mm cups are harder to match, and in most cases the better repair is replacing the door and the hinge together, since the price difference is less than a homeowner expects. We’ll tell you which one you have before we order anything.
OEM Bufftech parts do still exist through surplus channels, but availability is spotty and the markup is real. For most hinge, glide, and edge-sheet replacements, a documented aftermarket part from a major hardware supplier does the job. For oddball corner cabinet mechanisms, a pull-out tray retrofit, or anything where the Bufftech rail profile is non-standard, OEM matching maers more. We carry the common hinge sizes and adjustable glides on the truck. The odd ones come from our Bay Area supplier network, usually in two to three days.

Signs Your Bufftech Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Cabinet door hangs low or rubs the frame. The hinge plate has pulled away from the face frame because the original screw holes stripped or the installer over-tightened them. The fix is a filled-and-rebored plate, not a new hinge, unless the door itself has twisted from moisture.
- Drawer drops or binds on one side. The nylon roller on a Bufftech side-mount glide has shattered, or the glide’s rear mount screw backed out of the particleboard cabinet side. Replace the pair, not the one – a single new glide on an old drawer makes the opposite side work harder and fail sooner.
- Laminate edge strip peels at the counter nose or along the cabinet side. Heat cycling from a San Jose west-facing kitchen, plus steam from the dishwasher vent, softens the old contact adhesive until the edge strip lets go. Re-gluing works if the strip is intact; once it cracks, we replace the strip and refinish the seam.
- White ring or swelling under the sink cabinet. Water is getting between the cabinet floor and the vinyl liner layer. Bufftech’s original cabinet floors were particleboard, and once they swell past a certain point there’s no drying them flat again. We cut out the bad section, sister in a sealed plywood floor, and reinforce the corner where the cabinet meets the side panel.
- Hinges snap at the knuckle, not the cup. This is metal fatigue from a door that’s been adjusted repeatedly over the years, usually because the original problem was never fixed. When the knuckle breaks, the door falls hard enough to damage the adjacent cabinet face, so address it before it gives out entirely.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

In San Jose, the range depends on scope. A hinge plate repair or single drawer glide is a quick visit: parts under $50, labor in the $120 to $250 range, done in an hour. A full cabinet door replacement with new hinges and hardware runs $180 to $420 per door, depending on door size and whether we’re matching a Bufftech thermofoil finish or installing a paint-grade replacement. Counter edge strip repairs run $150 to $400 per linear section. A full Bufftech kitchen retrofit – cabinets, counters, hardware – lands in the $16,520 to $53,100 range we quote above, and that number moves with cabinet count, counter material, and whether we’re pulling the old cabinetry or working over the existing boxes.
What drives the spread? Cabinet configuration first. A galley kitchen in an Almaden townhome has a third of the linear footage of a Willow Glen ranch. Second, the condition of the substrate behind the visible surfaces – if the original Bufftech framing is sound, we surface-replace. If water or termite damage got into the studs, we rebuild. That’s the difference between a $20,000 job and a $40,000 job, and we’ll show you the evidence before we write the number.
Every quote is written before work starts: parts, labor, material disposal, and permit fees if the job requires them. No change orders at the door. Every completed job carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing – if anything we installed fails within a year, we come back and correct it at no charge. That’s The Garrison Standard, and we don’t work any other way.
San Jose price points, in dollars: full kitchen remodel $16,520 – $53,100; cabinet installation $4,720 – $15,340; countertop installation $2,360 – $7,670; backsplash installation $945 – $2,950; kitchen island installation $3,540 – $11,800.
DIY or Call Us?
A homeowner with a drill, a level, and patience can check which hinges are loose, see whether a glide is bent, and identify which cabinet face is swelling. That saves us a diagnostic trip, and saves you the service call if it turns out a hinge screw just backed out. What we don’t recommend is trying to re-bore a hinge cup by hand on a thermofoil door. The thin poly layer chips easily, a handheld bit wanders, and you end up with a ruined door face that costs more to replace than the hinge ever did. Same goes for prying off a cracked laminate edge strip – if the adhesive underneath is still bonded, you’ll tear the substrate and turn a $150 edge repair into a $600 counter resurface.
If the problem is a cabinet that pulls away from the wall, get a pro involved before the wall anchors fail completely. A loaded upper cabinet falling is a serious injury risk. We’ll come out, assess it, and write you a number. Call (669) 272-2637 for a free estimate.
FAQs

With proper sealing and hardware maintenance, Bufftech laminate cabinets and counters typically last 20 to 30 years in San Jose’s dry Mediterranean climate, but thermofoil door wraps start showing edge wear at 12 to 15 years, especially near dishwashers and range hoods where heat and moisture cycle daily. If your Bufftech kitchen is pushing two decades, expect hinge and edge failures to show up in clusters rather than one at a time. Call (669) 272-2637 for an honest assessment, and we’ll tell you if a repair makes sense or if replacement is the better money.
Yes, if the crack is at the frame joint and the panel itself is intact; we clamp, re-glue, and reinforce the joint with a drilled-and-pinned repair that holds as well as the original joinery, typically for $90 to $180 per door, but if the crack runs through the center panel or the thermofoil wrap has separated, replacement is the only straight fix. The good news is a single replacement door can be matched to a Bufftech finish by a competent cabinet shop, so you’re not forced into a whole-kitchen refacing because one door failed. The Garrison Standard means we write the repair recommendation, the price, and the expected life of the fix on one sheet of paper before you decide anything.
If the part is on our truck – common 35mm hinges, adjustable drawer glides, edge strips for standard laminate colors – we usually finish the repair the same visit, often inside an hour; specialty Bufftech parts that need a supplier order take two to three days to arrive in San Jose, and we don’t start the labor until the part is in hand with a matched write-up in front of you. We’re not going to tell you it’s a 20-minute job and then stand in your kitchen for three hours. Straight number, written scope, done when we said done.
We stock the fastest-moving Bufftech-compatible hardware – the hinge sizes and drawer glides that fail most often in San Jose kitchens – along with matching laminate edge sheets and touch-up sealants; for less common parts, we source from our Bay Area supplier network and we also hold inventory for KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone line items, which covers most of what we install across the Bay. You’re not paying us to learn your part number. We’ll match it, price it, and stand behind the install with the 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing.
