Barrette Driveway & Pavers: The San Jose Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Barrette-compatible driveway edging, paver restraints, and replacement components across San Jose, with paver driveway installation running $8,260 – $21,240 depending on square footage, site prep, and paver type. In most cases, we carry the common Barrette edging profiles and splice connectors on the truck, so a failed section of restraint or a shifted edge course can be corrected in a single visit. Homeowners usually discover the problem when a paver row starts drifting into the lawn, an edge spike has pulled loose after a heavy rain, or a snow-shovel caught the lip of the edging and bent it out of true.

A quick note before the specifics: Bradford Remodeling Co San Jose is an independent service provider. We install and repair Barrette-brand paver systems, but we’re not affiliated with Barrette Outdoor Living. The good news there is that we tell you the truth about what’s worth replacing and what’s still got life in it, because our name is on the work, not the brand label.

Which Barrette Models This Applies To

A whole-home remodel with the living, dining and kitchen areas opened up

Barrette’s paver and driveway lineup breaks into a few distinct families, and each one uses different edge restraints and accessories. The three you’re most likely dealing with in San Jose are the Barrette Paver Edging (black poly edging strips with integrated spikes, sold in 8-foot and sometimes 6-foot runs), the Barrette Landscape Edging (thinner profile for walkways and planting beds), and the Barrette Vinyl Driveway Edging (heavier gauge, taller face for aggregate and asphalt driveways). If you’re not sure which one you have, flip a section over and look for the stamped part code, usually a letter-number combo like “PE-8” or “VDE-6” molded into the plastic. The older Barrette edging from the mid-2000s didn’t always carry that stamp, so if yours is blank, measure the face height with a tape. Paver edging runs about 2.5 inches tall; the vinyl driveway line is closer to 3 inches and noticeably thicker.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: Barrette makes a decent factory edging, but their splice connectors are the first thing to crack, especially on the 8-foot runs installed before 2015. We stock the OEM connectors and a heavier aftermarket splice we’ve had better results with on San Jose’s clay-heavy soil. If your edging itself is waving or broken, OEM replacement makes sense. If the connectors failed but the strips are sound, the aftermarket splices cost about a third less and outlast the factory version. We’ll quote you both and let you pick.

One compatibility gotcha worth knowing: Barrette changed their spike design around 2017 from a round post to a flattened, ridged spike. The old round-post edging needs the old replacement spikes, which are getting hard to find at big-box stores. We keep a stock of both styles in our San Jose shop precisely because we’re tired of seeing homeowners drive to three stores and come home empty-handed.

Signs Your Barrette Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Edge course drifting outward. Pavers along the border start to separate from the field by a quarter inch or more. This is the classic symptom of a busted splice connector or a spike that’s pulled free, and it means the edging has stopped holding tension. Left alone, that outer row keeps walking and you eventually lose the clean line of the driveway.
  • Visible wave or bow in the edging strip. Walk the perimeter and sight down the line like you’re checking a board for crown. If the edging is dipping or humping, the spikes have likely snapped below grade or the strip itself warped from soil movement. San Jose’s clay soil expands when wet and contracts when dry, and that cycle is brutal on rigid plastic edging.
  • Spike heads popped up above the soil line. A spike that’s risen out of its hole is no longer anchoring anything. This usually follows a wet winter when the ground swelled and pushed the spike up. You can tap them back, but if they pop again, the hole is stripped and you need oversized spikes or a new section.
  • Edging cracked at a splice or corner. Barrette edging takes a beating at the corners, especially where a car tire catches the radius while backing out. Cracks at the splice points are a material-age issue; cracks at corners are usually from tire contact or a too-tight radius during installation. Both mean that section is done.
  • Paver surface stays wet or develops ruts. If you’re seeing standing water or soft spots in the paver field, the problem may not be the edging at all; it could be the base underneath. Edging keeps the sides together, but it can’t hold up a failing base course. We’ll diagnose which one it is before we quote you anything.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Barrette edging replacement and paver repair in San Jose, a simple edge-restraint swap on an existing driveway runs $300 – $900 depending on the linear feet involved and whether we’re pulling and resetting the edge course. If the failure goes deeper, meaning the base has washed out or the pavers have shifted enough to require re-screeding, you’re into partial paver driveway replacement territory at roughly $4 – $12 per square foot. Full paver driveway installation in San Jose runs $8,260 – $21,240 for a typical two-car drive, and that includes excavation, base compaction, sand bedding, paver setting, edge restraint, and joint sand.

Every quote is a written line-item price before we start. You’ll see the parts cost, the labor, and the disposal listed separately. No number moves at the door. And when the work is done, it’s covered under our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the edging fails or a paver shifts within a year of completion, we come back and correct it at no charge. In writing.

DIY or Call Us?

Replacing a cracked splice connector is a weekend-morning job if you have a hammer and a pair of snips. We won’t talk you out of it. What we will warn you against is trying to reset an edge course without pulling the pavers properly. When you pry up a paver to tuck edging underneath, you’re disturbing the sand bed, and if you don’t re-screed and re-compact, you’ll have a low spot that traps water and starts the whole failure cycle over. That’s the number-one mistake we see on San Jose DIY paver repairs. For anything involving base repair, drainage correction, or more than about ten linear feet of edging, call (669) 272-2637. We’ll give you a straight number and a written scope, and we’ll tell you if the fix is small enough to handle yourself.
